Call of the Wild

Hello kittens.

You’ve heard me purring for weeks now but have you made the leap and snagged your animal print for Fall?

Leopard and python are my picks this season and since I wrapped up my Wardrobe Essentials piece on Ch3 GMAZ, I wanted to tie in two essential pieces:

1. Cardigan Sweater: Grandpa Cardi $59

2. Stretchy Belt: Flower Bomb $22

…and because it’s almost Friday, I added a bonus feature (I never miss a chance to throw in a pop of color!):

3. Button Front Blouse: Kiss Me Coral $48

Want? Contact me here: I’m a Wild Child!

For the knowledge seekers:

Grandpa’s cardi is long and straight, which means it will hit at your hip or lower. It pairs especially well with short skirts and shorts (I’m wearing mine with white, flat front, 3″ inseam shorts) and transitions to Fall easily by adding tights and boots. Ladies who want to create height, wear Grandpa with a wedge heel or boot. For those who are all about the waist line, add Flower Bomb to define the mid-section.

The Perfect Maxi???

I admit the maxi dress can be over-used but this one’s an exception.

Introducing:
Cleopatra

Why? It’s oh-so right in every way; classy, comfortable, feminine, and sensual without being overt. Even better, it’s fully lined (no bra peekage under your arms, girls!) and the draped neckline features your collarbone.

Love!

For those who want the Minimal look, it comes in Camel too.

Enjoy!

RB3362 in Gunmetal

My new crush

I’ve grown quite the affinity for–and collection of–sunglasses this summer and am heart struck by this pair (didn’t hurt that they were on a rather handsome male I ran into in Scottsdale earlier this week).

No, this isn’t the classic Aviator frame, but rather its hip, contemporary cousin called the Cockpit (doesn’t the name alone sound rugged???). RB3362, to be exact.

Why am I flirting with this handsome pair of sunnies?
Because:
*It suits most face shapes
*It’s Unisex (buy one pair and share ‘em with your honey)
*It comes in array of frame and lens colors
*It’s labeled by an iconic brand that doesn’t break the bank

Want ‘em? Thought so! I worked out a sweet deal with my friend DeJuan (pronounced “deh-WON”) at the Sunglass Hut KIOSK (note KIOSK, not the store) at Scottsdale Fashion Square. If you ask for DeJuan and tell him FAWN ROCKS, he’ll give you $20 off your purchase.

Did You Know…
that Ray-Ban produced the two most imitated sunglass frames on the planet?

If you share this on Twitter or Facebook and correctly name those two frame names on my FB page Wall: I Love Fawn’s FB Page

you will receive 20 complimentary minutes toward any full session purchased (can be gifted as well!).

See you soon!

It’s a Cinch

I am re-newly infatuated with belts. Wide, skinny, double, or stretch, a belt is a fashionable accessory to finish a look or to add personality to an otherwise ordinary ensemble.

I often find that women are either unsure of how to wear a belt or timid to draw attention to her waistline. Upgrading your wardrobe with this  accoutrement is easier than you might think; here are some quick styling tips to help you get going:

If you’re short-waisted, try a narrow belt. Wear it ever-so-slightly under your natural waistline to subtly create the image of a longer torso.

If you’re long-waisted, opt for a wider belt. Do the opposite as your short-waisted sister, wear it slightly above your natural waistline and it will appear as if your legs grew longer (never thought a belt could have that effect did ya?).

If you are picky, picky and comfort is EVERYthing, choose belts with elastic as they stretch when you sit and shrink back up when you stand. Oh, and elastic belts can a have a nice “Spanx” effect when worn strategically.

Wear the same belt color as your top or dress if your waist is not so defined. On the other hand, if you’re blessed with a tiny middle, wear a pop of color or an animal print.

Basic training:

  • Layer a belt over a cardigan or
  • Wrap a double belted one around a loose-fit blouse or
  • Tie an obi style around a fitted dress or
  • Tailor a double breasted jacket with wide belt over the center

The great news is that belts come in all shapes, widths, and price ranges, so your wallet won’t suffer if you want to experiment. The trick is  to just get out there and have some fun with it.

Here are a few styles that catch my eye.

How to Rock the Denim Jacket

Denim Jackets…they’re baaack. Once ubiquitous, then démodé, now the rough and tumble rebel on the must-have list.  The jean jacket has roared its way back into our hearts and closets. Gone are the boxy, stiff cuts of previous eras, the look of this wild child is cut high and tight, generally in a soft cotton with a touch of elastayne to give it some stretch. This new breed has a fit that hugs, making it ideal for layering or sufficient on its own. Here are three quick ways to work this piece into your wardrobe.

1. Ditzy florals are a nice contrast against the toughness of the denim jacket. Try a floral mini dress or romper belted in the center, add ankle boots for a chic flair, throw on the jacket in a cropped variety, and you’ve got a look that’s very now.

2. Work in an office with a relaxed Casual Friday dress code? Then rock a sophisticated interpretation of the denim jacket.  Try a hip length, dark wash, pointed-collared version over a crisp white dress shirt, and satin-sheen chinos that hit at the ankle. A kitten or 3″ heel  will make a purr-fect shoe choice.

3. Want to go old-school with the sassy cowgirl look? You’re in luck, cowboy hats are hip as ever (and flattering on most face shapes!). 3″  or 5″ inseam shorts—denim or khaki—will do the trick, add an oversize tank or deep v-neck, your stompin’ boots, and you’ve got the look. To make it au courant, circle a lightweight scarf around your neck or swap the jacket for a denim vest.

How To…

Look Short

For my gravity defying sisters

Try full skirts and dresses to draw the eye out. More width = less height.

Avoid high waisted bottoms.

Try color blocking, it divides the body into shorter sections.

Skip the monochrome look as it is elongating.

Try a contrasting belt to interrupt the eye from going straight up and down.

Try an ankle strap around sandals.

Wear longer hair styles.

Try closed  or high collars.

Wear a cropped pant or a tapered jean that hit right at the ankle bone.

How to Rock the Tribe

If you haven’t noticed, you now will. The tribal look is it. While it’s not a style trend I would wear more than once every ten days, I love, LOVE, the concept in matte golds, java browns, sunset oranges, and blocks of black. See my style inspiration sheet here.

Tips?

But of course.

If You Have a Small Framed Silhouette

Geometric shapes of tribal designs can overwhelm your silhouette, so if you have a small frame, less is more. Try a solid colored tee—I like the toughness of sleeveless one—and pair it with an orange or gold skirt that hits above your knee in your skinniest thigh point (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, see me directly).  Now accessorize to your heart’s content…think scarf, chunky cuff, bold earrings, feathered gladiators.

If You Prefer Jewel Tones over Earth Tones

If you’re not a warm colored creature, you can substitute ethnic for tribal. Think traditional Indian saris…ooh, that just gave me goose bumps…and you immediately feel the need to break that old don’t-mix-gold-and-silver rule, right? Indian jewelry is one of my top five faves when it comes to accessories…and yes, both eastern AND western Indian. Whether it’s a chunky silver and turquoise squash blossom necklace or an intricately beaded panja, I am ALL about it. Makes me swoon.

If You Have a Medium-Large Framed Silhouette

Go sister. Unless you’re a super curvy type, you can easily do this look in just about any want you want.  Consult with me if you need any help at all. The only thing I’d avoid doing is animal print as it feels a little cliché. Don’t get me wrong, I adore cheetah, zebra, and tigers, but not when effecting a tribal look (see future post on How to Rock the Wild Cats…and the hooved, striped, horse-looking creature).

If You Have Chic and Dangerous Curves

You can easily pull off this look, just use caution with the angular edges of some of the prints. In general, you look best in rounded and flowing forms but, girlfriend, have at it with chunky statement accessories and shoes. This concept is one of your best looks. You get to play canvas with an endless flow of creative expressions.

5 Easy Ways to Update Your Wardrobe

The season has shifted for good and as your friendly image and wardrobe stylist, I want to remind you to rotate in cool looks for the hot summer months. Let me ignite your inspiration with these style trends to integrate and update your closet.

1. Forever in Blue Jeans

If you’re paying attention (and if you’re not, that’s quite alright and the reason I’m here) you know that denim isn’t just for your jeans right now, it’s for tops, dresses, skirts, trousers, and yes, jackets. Catch my latest TV story for tips on how to keep your cool in denim this summer http://fawncheng.com/video.html.

2. Bold Brights

You hear me talking about color all the time, yes? If you’re still color shy, do it on a dime so you feel good about taking the risk. I can teach you simple tricks in your own closet to figure this out.  I prefer stripes and florals. Try any of the looks-for-less retailers I’ve previously mentioned and don’t forget the rule of thumb for your print scale and proportion!

3. Max it Out

My favorite hemline for skirts is maxi length. For some of you, I know your first instinct is “bleah” but take a moment and consider the various volumes! There’s a style for almost every silhouette. At the very least, grab a girlfriend and go try one on.

4. Minimal Mania

Minimalism is hot with the fashion elite. Style Tip: Your optimal nude shades are either a shade lighter or darker than your own skin tone. Nudes can be classy and are simple to pull off as they tend to look best with low-key accessories.

5. Go Native

Fashion alert! There’s no denying the ethnic look on the style scene right now. My top picks are Tribal and Indian styles as they are rich in color and pattern.

You Wear It Well and the Little Black Dress Club

I was privileged to talk style and had so much fun with the ladies from the Little Black Dress Club at their privately hosted You Wear It Well Party. We covered dozens of topics, I can’t remember them all, but some of the night’s most enlightening moments came from the following one-on-one interactions.

Hem and A-ha!
Believe it or not, your hemlines do matter. Make sure your hemlines don’t hit the widest part of your body as this is where you’re directing the eye’s peripheral perspective. Raising your hemline a couple of inches can make you appear to be a couple of inches taller and a few pounds lighter…it really does work!

Think Thirds
Do you know the rule of thirds? Well, the LBD ladies learned all about it and realized that it does make a lot of sense. Artists and designers have been using the rule of thirds for centuries. There’s a long (and overly cerebral) theory about the rule of thirds, but all you really need to know is that the human eye generally prefers to view objects in a ratio of 1/3 to 2/3. Using this rule can be your secret weapon in making you look longer and leaner.

You Got It, Now Flaunt It
Sometimes we just don’t give ourselves permission to stand out of the crowd. So often we’re held back by old rules we learned as kids or from our own dread of sticking out and someone not liking it. My job as a stylist is to help my clients take their first steps into their own world of fabulous. Emerging into a new look doesn’t happen overnight, rather, it’s an evolution and a process because the new look must feel authentic to you and your objectives. One thing is certain, though, each and every person I meet has something beautiful to highlight and share with the world and this is where we start. What’s your favorite thing about you?

It’s Personal
Ever heard the expression “That dress is wearing you.”? Your personal coloring has a lot to do with this statement. Color theory and color psychology do have their place building a workable wardrobe, but an equally important point is to understand your personal coloring and if you are high or low contrast. Having this unique perspective will help you choose colors, prints, patterns, and accessories that will work in harmony with your natural features.

Each of the above topics deserves in depth consideration but I know that bite-size is best. I invite you to pick a couple of these tips and consider how you can put them to work for you. If you need any help, you know where to find me!
